Transition from High School to College
Attending Albany State University as a freshman undergraduate was an eye opener for me. I was determined to make a name for myself. The transition from high school to college was supposed to be very easy. I found myself struggling with academics. I lost my scholarship because of academics. I knew that I wanted to go back to college someday. The questions that I had in my head were the same one that I had when I left college the first time. How can I improve my academics? Would I be able to afford college? How long do I want to wait before I attempt to go to college again? Joining the military (Navy) was my choice. The Navy helped prepared me for dealing with these questions that lingered in my mind. Some people go through life by trial and error. Other people repeat the same problems over and over again. I chose to use the wisdom that I attained from the Navy to help me overcome these issues so that I do not repeat them again.
Being in the Navy for only two years, I found myself with a golden opportunity to start preparing for college. I had an opportunity to take some preparation classes for college. A few weeks after I started taking these classes, I was stunned. I saw myself actually learning techniques as to how to study efficiently while in college. The professor concentrated on three areas. The first area of focus was not being overwhelmed with college. The second focus was being prepared. The last focus was using my time efficiently. I used this knowledge on the second part of my deployment. I decided to take two college courses. The techniques that I had learned helped me. Even with my demanding schedule from my supervisor, I passed the courses with an A minus.
The second problem that I faced was finances. Knowing that the Montgomery G.I. Bill would pay for a certain percentage of college tuition; however, I still would need more money. I did not know what I was going to do about the rest of the money. I made the decision to stay in the Navy and save enough money to put myself through college. At the same time, I started taking more college classes. The Navy paid for these classes. I had to maintain a C average. After 9/11 passed, the government came up with the post 9/11 G.I. Bill. I had more than enough money for school.
The last problem that I was worried about is the age difference between the students and myself. While I took classes in the Navy, it was not a college environment. I was around military people who understood what was expected of them. I partied when I first attended college back in 1991. My thoughts are it will be the same way now as it was then. As I meet new students on campus, their mentality was different. The students were more about getting their education than partying.
Everyone can succeed in college. The transition from high school to college can be easy and rewarding. By having better study habits, I improved my academics. Joining the military helped me financially. Not being concern about the age difference helped me focus better. I had a game plan, and I stuck with it
