Female Serial Killers

1. The problem that the researchers are trying to answer is analyze homicides committed by
women (Perri & Lichtenwald, 2010). They are looking for the motives for the kills. They are also looking for the psychopathic traits.

2. The researchers are using case study to do the research. The researchers are looking at cases
where females were the killers. They are comparing evidence from the crime scene and are
conducting interviews with the women to see if there is any comparison between a male and
female killers (Myers, Gooch, & Meloy, 2005). I do not believe that this is successful. Example for this is if a male private part is cut off, you automatic think that it was done by a female.

3. I think that they found some answers to some of the questions. For example, the difference
between a male and female serial killers. The different motives for their killings (Perri & Lichtenwald, 2010)

4. They did not mention anything about limitations in their study.

5. The researchers did mention that these studies are ongoing.

Robert Schumann was born on June 8, 1810 inn Endenich, Germany. He was the last of
five children. During his early years, Schumann had a thing for singing. He then started learning
how to play the piano around the age of seven. During this time also he learned to speak Greek,
Latin and French. Schumann early childhood experience exposed him to the likes of Ignaz
Moscheles when he toured with his mother Carlsbad. Schumann and his oldest brother started
performing theatrical production in their home; in addition to learning to play the cello and flute.
Why he served as chief organizer at the Verien, Schumann went through a dark time in his life.
He lost his sister to suicide and he lost his father to a nervous disorder. Schumann started to
study music by Mozart, Beethoven, and Hayden and Louis Ferdinand. Some of Schumann
famous music is Piano Sonata No.2, Carnival, and Traumerei Op.15. He was better known for
his criticism also.

The piece of music that I enjoyed from the Faculty Recital was the Furchtenmachen. It was
played by Stephen Coxe. The music started off with a low pitch. The pitch begin to pick up
throughout in the music. At times the melody became disjunct. This is when the notes on the
piano jumped around, but they seemed to be played in a rhythem. The dynamics were soft. This
piece of music also had distinct tone or pitches in which it went from low to high.

Johann Ernest Galliard was born on February 18, 1666 to a French wig-maker. Galliard
learned to play the oboe and flute as a member of the orchestra Pierre, Marechal. Later on he
went to London and became the court musician for the Prince of Denmark. Galliard was soon
notice by the Queen for his performance as a composer in the queen’s Theater. Most of Galliard
music was for the opera, where he excel in his work. His work for the opera was not good at
first. He had a couple of set back with Calypso and Telemachus. Most of his work then delt with
Greek mythology. The music was mostly telling a story. Later he got into love stories, a bible
story and a tragedy to Julies Ceasar. These were considered a hit to some.

The music that I like from the Faculty Recital was Adagio. Both the trombone and Piano
sounded good. They both was in harmony with each other. The transition were very distinct. You
could actually distinguish when the music went from one part to another. The timpani was also
very distinctive. The first three notes that was played by the piano was good, but when the
trombone came right behind and played the same note; the trombone sounded better at times.
The pitch vary at times with high and low notes. In this piece of music being played, it felt like
the distance was not content as to where it was at. The homophony at times did have one
prominent melody accompanied by subordinate. Overall this piece of music was very nice to listen to.
I like the music that was played at the concert. It is different from what I listen to at times. The music is relaxing and enjoyable to listen to.

Essay #2
Poetry is a story that is written to make the reader feel some type of way towards a particular situation or event. Word choice, tone and imagery are some of the main focus points towards writing good poetry. Tim Seibles, Brian Turner, Tony Hoagland and Philip Levine wrote poetry that these characteristics are shown throughout their poems. This paper will cover diction, tone and imagery of four poems.
Brian Turner “The Hurt Locker” is a free verse poem. It was written in no particular or specific form. The tone is not relaying on physical pain, but emotional pain that people carry around after experiencing some type of bad situation. “Nothing but hurt left here” (B. Turner),
Word choice or diction in this poem is briefly concentrated and centered around one thing of making the reader believe that they are experiencing this pain. “Believe it when you see it” (B. Turner). This sets up the imagery that puts the reader in the action itself and it carries the reader to an emotional stance. “Believe it when a twelve-year-old rolls a grenade into a room” (B. Turner). Having experience a life or death situation, the narrator want the reader to really see what a soldier carries on the inside of them, the emotions baggage that has no limit to it. “Open the hurt locker and learn how rough men come hunting for souls”
“Kerosene” written by Tim Seibles is a free verse written poem. It is a narrative poem. The tone is bent around anger due to what was happening in Los Angeles at the time. (L.A. riots). “In my country the weather is not too good” (T. Seibles), this is telling the reader that there is trouble. Word choice is emphasing towards hurt and anger. Similes are used within the last few lines, “like blood filling cracks in the street slowly” and “like candles seen through thick curtains” (T.Seibles). This can be taken as when the president arrived, he was shocked as to how bad the situation was. It not a high priority on his agenda, but he had to address it. Caesura is used in this poem also just to create that natural pause to emphasize some word or phrases.
“America” written by Tony Hoagland is a narrative poem. The tone of the poem is set when a student reacts to another student’s comment about America and prison. “America is for him a maximum security prison” (T. Hoaglund). The student explains what the prison is made of, “whose walls are made of Radio Shacks, Burger Kings and MTV episodes” (T. Hoaglund). Then the tone starts to shift when the student starts to think about the dream he had involving his father. “Freed from that which kept me from my liberty”. (T. Hoaglund). Those words made him reconsider whether or not he was dreaming or was the other student correct about how he really felt about America. Imagery can be seen towards the end of the poem when he speaks about watching the rivers of bright merchandise running past you, while you are in your own dream world. That change his total outlook on how he feel about America and how to wake up from this dream.
“Call It Music” was written by Philip Levine. This is a narrative poem. The tone is mellow, kind of creating a pleasant atmosphere. There is little to no rhyme scheme. Word choice or diction is not emphasize in the poem. Imagery is used more to an allusion in this poem. “The whole process has a name, a word I don’t know” (P. Levine). He is looking for something and the closest thing that come close to it is the music by Charlie Parker. Charlie was someone that he looked up to and respected for his music.
Emotions are your true feeling that none can take from you. To live life you will have good times and bad times. In “The Hurt Locker”, we saw how much emotional pain soldiers carry with them after wars. “Call It Music”, we see how someone deals with the death of a close friend or mentor. “Kerosene”, people deal with racial issues in violence in which it causes more problems. In “America,” by looking at problems from another person’s point of view can make you come up with solutions to your problem.

Car Crash While Hitchhiking
And
The Things They Carried
Essay #1

Author’s write stories to enlighten the readers; or to impose suspension, actions or to leave you wondering towards the end of the story. Denis Johnson and Tim O’Brien are two writers who impose this type of suspense to their readers. The Things They Carried and Car Crash While Hitchhiking are two particular stories that leave that impression to the readers. The narrator puts different thoughts into play from point of view, theme, plot and tone. This paper will cover the point of view and theme of the two stories.
Tim O’Brien “The Things They Carried” was written from the third person point of view, with an omniscient narrative stance. The narrator seems to know everything that is going on with all the soldiers such as what each one likes to carry on each mission. ”Henry Dobbins carry extra rations because he is big”, Dave Jensen takes tooth brush, dental floss and bars of soap. (O’Brien). Psychic distance seems to be close because the narrator talks about some of the characters and what they are thinking or doing while not directly in contact with the person while it is happening. “What they carried was partly a function rank, partly of field specialty”. (O’Brien).
The theme of the of the story does not necessary revolve around the physical things that they had to carry around as per SOP, “P-38 Can opener, pocket knives, heat tabs, dogs tags, mosquito repellant, C ration, two or three canteens of water; all weighting between fifteen to twenty pounds” (O’Brien). The narrator continues talking about personal things that they carry also like “David Jensen carry three pair of socks and a can of Dr. Scholl’s foot powder; Ted Lavender carried tranquilizers because he was scared; Rat Riley carried comic books” (O’Brien). All the physical materials that was needed for the mission did weight up to certain pounds that a physical body could carry, but the weight of the psychological emotion that these people was caring could and did weight up to more than that of the physical weight that they would carry with them. This was a lot of internal weights that they would carry for the rest of their life and there in their minds nothing could come close to that. “Kiowa distrust of the white man; Lt. Cross caring of the photos of Martha. To see someone die right in front of you has an every lasting memory; therefore creating memories and emotions that would never leave you; “Kiowa, who watch it happen, said it was like watching a rock fall”.(O’Brien). Lt. Cross carried the most because he was the one responsible for the deaths. His actions prior to the death of Lavender could have been better choices for everyone like” accepting blame for what had happen to Lavender, imposing strict field discipline” (O’Brien).
Denis Johnson “Car Crash While Hitchhiking” was written from a first person point of view. The author seems to be very close to the action. “I knew a certain Oldsmobile would stop for me, and by the sweet voices of the family inside it, I knew that we’d have an accident in the storm” (D. Johnson). Temporal distance seem to be removed from the story. The character of (fuckhead) seems to be an unreliable character because of his use of drugs. “A salesman who shared his liquor; Traveling salesman who feed me pills” (Johnson). All of these situations were before he got into the Oldsmobile with the family. Before the car crash, when fuckhead got out of the Volkswagen with the college man, he was high of from the hash. Once inside of the Vehicle with the family, all he could remember was “I deemed I was looking right through my eyelids” (D. Johnson). And even after the accident, fuckhead was with the truck driver; fuckhead walked by the wreckage and said to himself,” I mean that he could not tell me what he was dreaming, and I couldn’t tell him what was real” (D. Johnson).
The theme is not centered on the car crash; but more of the feelings actions and thoughts that fuckhead is having and reacting to. For example when in Kansas City, the salesman starts talking about his wife and kids that he loved so much. He speaks about the girlfriend that he had on the side briefly. All that fuckhead emotions could conger was “feeling jiltered and sad” (Johnson). Another example was when he first got into the Oldsmobile; he did not care if he lived or died; “I just wanted to sleep,” (Johnson). To hear the reactions when the wife was told that her husband was dead showed a spark or emotion feeling that fuckhead had not encountered. “She shriek as I imaged an eagle would shriek”, (D. Johnson). To see someone with so much emotional freedom gave him hope.
Everybody deals with situations differently. Depending on you emotional input or output of the situation, everyone reacts differently. To see the emotional reaction in The Things They Carried is more about not the physical things but the emotional burden and how you deal with it personally. Car Crash While Hitchhiking shows what a person who has no ideal as to how he/she want to live their life and what measures that they will go through not to have that emotion connection. At the end of the day we are all human equipped with emotions, how do you deal with it?

While serving in the Navy for twenty years, sailors were taught to write short sentences. The chain of command majority did not have writing skills. They wanted the quick and easy way of doing things. I started taking college courses and saw that writing skills are necessary in order to complete in the civilian world. My first professor told me to take a writing class if I wanted graduate from college someday. What I had to prepare for was a hard decision for me. I hade to know when I wanted to go back to college? Would I have enough money to pay for college? How would the interacting with younger kids discourage me from attending college? These issues will be discuss in the body of the essay.

While serving in the military, I made my mind up that I would go back to college and earn my degree. I wanted to become the first person in my family to graduate from college. Being from a medium size family and the only male, I had to make the right choices in life; seeing how not to good my sisters turn out. I did not want that life. I had to have a plan as to when I would go back to college, financial stability, and the age gap I would have to deal with.

Essay #3

Judge Claudia Wilkens of United States District Court in Oakland, California issued an
injunction against current rules that prohibited athletes from earning or receiving money from
the use of their names and images in video games and television broadcasts. This ruling open
the door for athletes to receive a portion of the proceeds for their athleticism and likeness.
Horace Mitchell, a writer for the U.S. News and World Report, wrote an article on January six,
two thousand fourteen in response to the ruling. Mitchell argument was that “students are not
professional athletes” (US News and World Report). In response to his article, I provide reason
as to why student- athletes should be paid while in college. Scholarships do not cover everything
associated with colleges expenses for athletes; the image that the student-athlete is creating for
themselves; the money that the athletes is creating for the colleges should be shared with the
athletes.
Students-athletes attending college on a sport scholarships is rewarding within itself.
Even though it seems that the student –athlete is receiving a free education, it is not free within
itself. Student-athletes are using their given abilities and talent to pay the college back. College is
exploiting their talents on a national stage. When colleges offer the scholarship, education is
secondary to the sport. Scholarships do not cover all the expenses that come with college
expenses. Students-athletes have a demanding schedule.
Most student-athletes cannot get a job and maintain their demanding schedule. Unable to
socialize, go out with classmates or even buy a three piece chicken dinner are the result of these
hardships from accepting scholarships. Therefore, by paying students-athletes a small portion of
the money generated from the profits can reduce some of the financial hardships that student-
athletes endure.
Another reason why student-athletes should be paid while attending college is the
image that they are building for their future. This could be like on the job training to student-
athletes. While professional baseball and basketball allows for high school athletes to enter their
perspective drafts, college football does not allow it. Indeed, college football does produce more
revenue and profits than basketball, college football programs would spend more money paying
it athletes.
Student-athletes showing casing their talents in college do generate billions of dollars in
proceeds and revenues. Although not all colleges receive the millions of dollars from the profits,
the coaches’ salaries are on the rise into the millions of dollars, sport facilities are seeing large
upgrades from the student-athlete talents. A portion of these proceeds should go to the student-
athletes because it is their ability that is helping the program receive this money at the end of the
year.
College is a business full of opportunist and crooks. The way that college administrators
limited student-athletes from obtaining money in order to survive college is not right. Personal
items that belong to student-athletes should could have the authority to sell it in order to obtain
money in a legal way. Applying rules to halt someone from obtaining financial stability is only
making student-athletes leave school early.

Essay #2: How to enhance my writing skills

My first semester of college was a disaster. I failed to keep my academics in check. Joining the military was the best option for me. The Navy allowed me to take some college courses. I passed those courses. Writing in the Navy and writing for college is totally different. Navy writing do not rely on a lot of perfection, they just want the basics. College writing relies on a total new look upon writing. The professors are very focus and going into details about writing. If I want to succeed in college, I must come up with ways to enhance my writing skills. I must learn to write complete sentences. Defining what a thesis is about will enhance my writing skills also. Finally learning how to put everything together will help me with my writing skills.
Enhancing my writing skills starts first with subject availability or a thesis. If students do not know what they are writing about; they will not write effectively. Choosing a subject is not as easy as some people would think. Subjects can be too broad. For example,” Green House Effect” can produce many results. What do you want to know about the greenhouse effect? Learning to narrow searches to a specific area will help define what subject to write about. This helps generate ideals that students can base their thesis on.
Sentence fragments, incomplete sentences, subject verb agreement and run-on sentences are things that will hurt students with college writing. I took the writing sample placement test this past summer and failed it. I thought that I had done well. Mr. Michael Holt explained to me how the test was graded. He also showed me the mistakes that I made on the test. Sentence fragments and incorrect punctuating was the reason that I failed the test. He suggested that I take the UNIV 150 course to help me with my writing. I have learned a lot about sentence fragments, punctuation marks, college wording and other things that has helped me with my writing. I have to keep up with these new techniques to improve my writing.
The last thing that can help me enhance my writing skills is learning to put it all together. Some people write and do not know how to put everything together to make it as one. Connecting main focus points helps the reader understand what you are writing about. If students are talking about specific things in their paragraphs before, then they do not even talk about it anymore is not the correct way to write. Reiterate main points again in the last paragraph to share your main points again.
Students should remember to pick a subject that they can write about. Use correct punctuation, complete sentences, and putting it all together at the end will help students enhance their writing skills. In addition to the above suggestions, students should take their time.

The writing sample placement test essay is very hard to navigate. Students are given ninety minutes to write about a topic that they may know little about. Students have to choose three main ideals and write an essay with little errors for acceptance to writing 150. A majority of Freshman students cannot pass this test for some reason
